LEADERSHIP

ADVISING AND MENTORING EXPERIENCE

As a dedicated educator, I've had the privilege of guiding talented McNair Scholars and watching our award-winning CoSo student organization thrive. The meaningful connections formed through student advising and leading our transformative summer abroad program have been incredibly rewarding. I've contributed to our campus through faculty workshops, community engagement, and leadership roles on the Faculty Evaluation Committee and IRB. In the classroom, I create an environment where animated discussions flourish and every student voice matters. Clicking on any of the images below will take you to examples of my work in that area.

MENTORING MCNAIR AND HONORS RESEARCH

I mentored McNair Scholars through their research projects, including guiding a student studying East Austin gentrification from initial research through presenting at the National Research Conference in Kansas City.

I also directed Honors Thesis students in their scholarly work and helped them design their presentations.

These experiences reflect my commitment to developing research skills in promising students and providing personalized guidance through complex academic challenges.

SPONSORING THE COMMUNICATION SOCIETY

As faculty advisor, I helped transform the struggling Communication Society into an award-winning student organization.

We secured funding for officers to attend national communication conferences in San Francisco, Orlando, and New Orleans and partnered with PRSSA to host career panels featuring local media professionals.

CoSo embraced community service through charity runs, food drives, campus fundraisers, and disaster relief—activities that embodied our university's mission of service.

ADVISING STUDENTS FOR THEIR FUTURE

I advised approximately 20 communication majors each semester on their courses, degree plans, career guidance, and other opportunities.

I wrote numerous recommendation letters, helping students secure jobs, internships, scholarships, and graduate school acceptances.

Supporting exceptional students like Presidential Award winner Brittany Ward and Fulbright Scholar Collin Phillips was particularly rewarding.

LEADING STUDENTS ON AN INTERNATIONAL ADVENTURE

I developed and led a six-week study abroad program in Angers, France, teaching Media and Globalization while my colleague taught Social Media in a Global Context.

For most of our fourteen students, this six-week adventure was their first meaningful international experience.

We created a student blog for reflection on cultural media similarities and differences. We prioritized cultural immersion through excursions, attempting to give students an authentic French experience.

SHARING WITH COLLEAGUES AND COMMUNITY

I coached faculty and students on creating engaging presentations and co-led a workshop on educational social media at the National Communication Association convention.

I presented regularly at Teaching Excellence symposiums on topics like data visualization and digital curation.

My training extended to community organizations, and I collaborated with our tech team to implement new tools across the university.

LEADING COMMITTEES

I've served on many key university committees including the Faculty Evaluation Committee, Institutional Review Board (six years), Faculty Senate, and Internship Council.

I am a collaborative leader and group member. I enjoy working together to create the best outcomes possible.

Within my department at St. Edward's, I led search committees and chaired our assessment project's digital transformation as well as serving on multiple other committees.

At Prairie View A&M, I chaired the National Accreditation Committee and helped develop our Digital Media graduate program—always committed to the mission of the university and institutional growth.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

In my classroom, I create a space where structure meets engagement. My meticulously crafted syllabi aren't just documents—they're roadmaps that give students confidence in their journey.

Observers often comment on my well-orchestrated sessions and visually compelling presentations. While I "run a tight ship," my students know this structure creates freedom for authentic learning.

I take pride in timing activities perfectly while maintaining an atmosphere where every voice matters and students feel genuinely seen. The clarity I provide becomes the foundation for the creative thinking and discussion that follows.
